Upward Falling tells the story of my life's journey following my conscience wherever it has led.
On my first summer break from college, I went off to visit Germany in search of relatives. Couldn't find them but I soon got arrested in East Berlin for taking photos of a machine gun tower from the communist side of the Berlin Wall. Oops. That's what happens when you're following your conscience instead of signs that say things like Fotografieren Forboten!
The next summer I went to New Orleans to register Black voters in the Lower Ninth Ward. Our project fell apart after being threatened by a local political boss. So I ended up working on the docks and playing pickup basketball with my new friends from the Ward. I learned a lot that summer. This was my first encounter with racial violence, which I would later find in many other countries around the world.
As life progressed, I became a war correspondent in Vietnam, before being drafted into the army while living as a journalist in Saigon. After applying for and being rejected as a conscientious objector to the war, I fled to Norway. I'd just seen too much political corruption and heard too many official lies in Vietnam to conclude the war was morally ethical. The end result was a two-year chase by the CIA, who wanted to recruit me to spy on AWOL U.S. soldiers in Scandinavia. Those escapades eventually led me back home to face a court case entitled United States of America vs. Thomas E. Miller. I was prepared to go to jail...
